The goal is for Germany and the EU to devise a uniform digitisation strategy. A long-overdue appeal to this effect is now in the public domain. The appeal takes the form of an open letter addressed by Angela Merkel, Mette Frederiksen, Sanna Marin and Kaja Kallas to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The four heads of government call on the EU to work towards digital sovereignty.
In the Green Deal the EU has set out ambitious climate targets. The German Advisory Council on Global Change (Wissenschaftliche Beirat der Bundesregierung Globale Umweltveränderungen - WBGU) has noted that it will only be possible to meet these targets in tandem with a resolute digital strategy. In its position paper, “A European Way to our Common Digital Future”, the WBGU sets forth the systematic interlocking of these two levers.
Through the Data Governance Act the EU Commission aims to leverage the potential of data held by public bodies and companies or voluntarily disclosed by private individuals.
