“Developing for the Internet of Things fills a gap in my career”

Emre Ozcelik moved to Germany to work as Software Engineer at beyonnex. In this interview, he reveals why after many years in the business, he can't let go of development, and what advantages he sees in working for a young company. He also presents his private project for next summer.

Emre, you have been working as a software developer for more than ten years. What fascinates you about the “IT-world”?

Oh, I've been interested in software development since I was a child. At the time, it was still largely uncharted territory. When I started writing code, I really loved it. I was particularly fascinated by the possibility of using software to make things work and control them virtually, for example complex computer systems. This enthusiasm never waned. I then went on to study computer engineering and later worked in this field.

What brought you to beyonnex?

I first heard about beyonnex when a headhunter called me. What he told me about the company immediately excited me. I had never worked for a young company that was still finding its way and was eager to improve. Beyonnex seemed like a kind of start-up to me, but with the group and Kalo as established companies behind it. That seemed ideal to me. The idea of being able to help the company while doing something new and developing myself personally in the process was very attractive to me. That was the deciding factor.  Also, I found it very attractive to work in IOT (Internet of things). That had been a gap in my career that I wanted to fill. Finally, I had wanted to work in Germany for some time, and beyonnex made this possible for me with a suitable job offer and a lot of support with visa issues, necessary documents and the like. That really helped a lot.

What exactly do you do at beyonnex today?

As a software developer, I am part of one of several teams. My team deals specifically with the installation process for our software. We provide installers with an application – both mobile and web-based – that we have developed to get the software up and running. To do this, we continue to develop the app and integrate new features and capabilities. Essentially, I see my job as providing installers with the best possible experience. This is very rewarding work for me. It's always great to see the results of your work tested in practice and to see how your company is progressing. My team’s recent product hasn’t been released yet, and I am really looking forward to its roll-out and seeing how it works in the real life and getting feedback from installers.

How important is it for you that your company pursues an overarching purpose? In the case of beyonnex and the noventic group, for example, the goal of making housing more climate-friendly with intelligent technology?

I think that’s very important.  Personally, I often ask myself what I can do, how I can change my lifestyle to live more sustainably. Of course, it’s also very important to me to work for a company that does something meaningful. I absolutely see that with beyonnex, and it makes me proud to be a part of it.

Do you use smart heating technology in your home yourself?

Unfortunately, that’s not possible at the moment. I currently live in a fully equipped apartment, and it doesn’t have this kind of technology. I really like it in Hamburg, and maybe I’ll look for something more permanent to live in. In that case, I’d make a point of it.

You’ve been living in Germany since mid-2022. How do you get to know the country and its people?

I’m very open and curious and love travelling. Since I arrived in Germany, I’ve already taken many short trips and visited cities like Schwerin, Lübeck and Hannover. I've also decided to cycle a lot in the summer – it seems to be a very typical and popular way of travelling in Germany. So, I am becoming familiar with the lifestyle here.
